Things to do in Amsterdam when you're old.
Off in October for three days, I have one day and one night to fill outside of work commitments so all recommendations are appreciated.

Under consideration for the daytime bit so far are the Rijksmuseum, Heineken Brewery, and Ajax Stadium tour.

The one night where I'm not out with work colleagues I need something suitable for a grumpy middle-aged git.

FYI - I have no interest in the local herbal culture or getting AIDS from a brass.

Took Mrs Beat to Amsterdam last year, my first "cultural" visit. Highly recommend the Anne Frank and Van Gogh museums. Its worth booking the Anne Frank museum if you can, we waited over 2 hours to get in, which wasn't a lot of fun on a cold November evening.

Anne Frank's house?

Not sure of been suggested. But seeing as you were interested in the resistance museum I assume you have an interest in WW2 history. If you do it's well worth a visit. Doesn't take too long and is close to a busy area for bars and cafes so you can mix it with lunch and a drink.

Do yourself a favour and take a train from Schipol and head half an hour south to Delft. It's like Amsterdam but without the hoardes of stinking tourists! Thank me later!

I've heard that "There's nobody there but a whole load of mice."

This mouse he got lonesome,
he took him a wife
A windmill with mice in,
it's hardly surprisin'
She sang every morning, "How lucky I am,
Living in a windmill in old Amsterdam!"

Hotbox off of all the stoned tourists blazing as they stagger by and avoid getting hit by cyclists

Go to old Amsterdam. There is a windmill with a mouse that lives right there on the stair with clogs on going clip-clippety-clop on the stair oh yeah.

If you've a touch of Alzhiemer's, the circular canal boat trip is right up your street - time you leave the first jetty you'll have forgotten what it looked like and every 2 minutes will be like visiting somewhere new.

All-day fun for old gits. I think I did it once...

I once had a couple of hours in Amsterdam (huge wait for a connecting flight at Schipol, so I went into town).

Wandering around aimlessly, I found a brilliant cheese shop opposite the street where the prostitutes sit in the windows (I'm assuming there's only one).

Highlight of my visit

Thanks for the useful replies.

The Resistance Museum is going on the short-list at the expense of the Heineken Tour. Supperclub could well go onto the list too.

As said if you are doing the Rijksmuseum then the Van Gogh Museum is across the park behind it.
And everyone knows that Vince is the man.

If you want some activity hire a bike at the station and take the ferry thing across to the other side & go and look at some windmills & canals.

Massively overrated city.

Go to the Supperclub or Club NL. Or some of the bars around The Nieuwmarkt/Waterlooplein where I lived.

Re: Things to do in Amsterdam when you're old.
Given it's a major European city I was quite surprised at how little there was to see and do if you didn't smoke or take in the red light district.

Canal boat trip was alright but the buildings/sights lacked significance. But I'd probably vote for the museum district....recall about 3 or 4 all being next to each other and the Van Gogh museum being decent.

Try to avoid getting run over by a cyclist.

Not as easy as you would think.

I visited this dutch resistance museum as an old git - moved by the bravery of the student movement and ordinary people hiding jews taking huge risks
